Definitoin Explanation Text

Explanation is a text which tells processes relating to forming of natural, social, scientific and cultural phenomena. Explanation text is to say ‘why’ and ‘how’ of the forming of the phenomena. It is often found in science, geography and history text books.

Structure Explanation Text

Generic Structure of Explanation Text

– General statement

General statement; stating the phenomenon issues which are to be explained.

– Sequenced of explanation

Sequenced explanation; stating a series of steps which explain the phenomena.

Purpose of Explanation Text

– Explanation is a text which tells processes relating to forming of natural, social, scientific, and cultural phenomena.

– To explain how or why something happens.

Language Features of Explanation Text

In an explanation text, there are linguistic features as below :

– Using simple present tense

– Using abstract noun (no visible noun)

– Using Passive voice

– Using Action verbs

– Containing explanation of the process

Example

Seasonal change today is impossible to predict. Scientists believe that it is all because of global warming. We can notice this when the summer gets warmer and the winter gets colder.

Usually, seasons change because of the sun’s revolution. In the summer, our earth’s position leans toward the sun. This makes some parts of our earth get hotter since they get closer to the sun.

And at other times, the earth gets a little bit further from our sun. It makes some regions on earth get colder. The other parts of the globe may have similar seasons but at different times.

Between June and August, the earth’s southern half experiences winter time. Winter occurs in the northern hemisphere in December to February.

  Kusno Sosrodihardjo or better known as Ir. Soekarno was born in Surabaya, June 6, 1901. Bung Karno, who was the first President of the Republic of Indonesia, died on June 21, 1970 in Jakarta at the age of 69 and he was buried in Blitar, East Java. President Soekarno lives in Tulungagung, East Java with his grandfather. He did not spend his childhood with his parents. In Tulungagung, Soekarno had attended school, but could not finish it, because he was back with his parents living in Mojokerto.   Thomas Alva Edison is one of the most important scientists in the history of science. However, in his childhood, he always got bad grades at school, until in the end his mother dismissed Thomas from school and taught him himself at home because he had received a warning from the school that Thomas was a child who could not study at school.
